Living with Eczema

If you have chronically dry skin or see patches of skin that is red, scaly, crusty or hardened and intensely itchy, it would be best to check with your doctor to see if you have Eczema.

Eczema affects 25 percent of Canadians. The struggle with eczema can continue for life if it's not managed properly.

Our skin serves as a barrier against bacteria, viruses, fungi irritants and allergens. Dry, itchy skin usually leads to redness and inflammation. Intense itchiness usually results in scratching, which leads to more inflammation of the outer layer of the skin. Damage done from scratching may be the biggest contributing factor to eczema flares, inflammation, and bacterial infection.

Certain ingredients in skincare products and fragrances can easily cause irritation and people suffering from eczema should be very careful of what they wear on their bodies.

Workable Lifestyle Suggestions:

  • Moisturize at least twice a day, especially while the skin is dry.
  • Manage your day to minimize stress.
  • A good source of Omega 3 and 7 with Vitamin D will help to promote healthier skin.
  • Do not scratch! Put lotion on instead.
  • For good measure, keep nails trimmed short and filed smooth.
  • Try natural ingredient moisturizers, and use a heavier one during winter months.
  • Avoid harsh soaps and select products that are specially formulated for eczema or sensitive skin.
  • When washing or bathing, try to regulate the water temperature. Don’t shock the skin as it may cause your eczema to flare up.
  • Wear cotton clothing and if possible, try to select an extra rinsing cycle when doing laundry.
