Living with Constipation

A lot of diseases start in the gut; in fact constipation can lead to a multitude of problems that have a long term effect to our health.

Sometimes, people who have constipation can even suffer with the condition for years! Most of the early symptoms of constipation can be easily corrected before it mutates in to other problems. Once it becomes a habitual situation, it will be harder to regulate.

Common causes are as follows:  

  • Not enough fibre or fluids in diet
  • Limited physical activity and constant inactivity (sitting position)
  • Diet with heavy carbohydrates and sugars
  • Changes in routines (such as going on vacation)
  • Did not immediately go to the bathroom when the urge came ( especially prevalent in outdoor workers and taxi drivers)
  • Changes in medications  
  • Living in a high stress environment
Workable Lifestyle Suggestions
  • Consume prunes, figs, celery, oatmeal and tea
  • Form a habit of having a bowel movement in the morning or before bedtime
  • Drink enough fluids, especially with every meal
  • Processed carbohydrates and sweet desserts can easily cause waste to harden and become stuck inside the intestines especially when water is not taken with it; so avoid those foods if you are suffering from constipation
  • Drink a cup of warm water in the morning and replenish the moisture in your system
  • Avoid using laxatives on a constant basis, choose a non-laxative remedy instead
  • If you are on a diet, make sure your diet meal plan includes enough fiber and liquids
